Lifespring and the New American Dream,
by John Hanley
As we look around earth today, we are heartened
to see all the great nations of the world following America's lead
to empower the personal liberty and individual opportunity of all
their citizens through democracy. The original values of the American
Dream, "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness," have
not only carried us far as a nation, but truly have been a "shot
heard round the world."
Right here at home,
the American Dream has come to be known as a set of personal symbols:
a successful job, marriage with 2.4 children, owning a home, cars
and so forth. Although these symbols represent our underlying values
(strong families, rewarding careers, freedom, and connection with
our communities and with nature), for many of us the frenzied pursuit
of the symbols has replaced the real life experience of our deep
values and of making a difference in the world.
Our traditional values
are as important, and as available to us, as ever. But making them
work in the modern world means reaching beyond the symbols and learning
to enhance our personal capacities to empower, relate, and be committed
to one another.
It's time, once again,
to restate the American Dream in terms that transcend the geo-political
definition of the United States and can inspire the modern world.
The New American Dream is a vision of opportunities and fulfillment
for all human beings in relationship with each other and the world.
It is a vision of a world that works for everyone.
